Journalist Neil Custis has said on Sky Sports’ The Sunday Supplement that there should more balance when discussing Liverpool’s recent success after they “blew” the title last season.
What did he say?
This week was a big show for the Sunday morning television programme, with Jacqui Oatley presenting it for the first time following Neil Ashton’s exit.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
However, it was The Sun journalist Neil Custis who made some interesting remarks in regards to the Reds, and he said that they threw away the title last term. He explained: “All this eulogising about Liverpool, yes I understand it, but let’s remember that they blew the title last season. This time last year when they went to Manchester City and could have gone 10 points clear. Great game. Lost it. Four points and then they struggled for the next couple of weeks and City went ahead.
“When the bar is that high [referring to Manchester City’s run last season], that is what they have got to do. Credit to them, they have actually gone on and what City did last season seems to have exhausted them. The reason we are talking about this is that it has taken 30 years to win the league.”
Harsh
It is incredibly harsh that Custis would be so dismissive about Liverpool’s title challenge last term. Yes, they may have had a small blip after losing 2-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium – they drew four of their next eight games – it was hardly a collapse. They still remained unbeaten, and draws against Everton and Manchester United are not exactly embarrassing results either.
In the end, they managed to get their hands on no less than 97 points, eventually finishing just one behind the Citizens. Their haul was the highest of any second-placed team in the history of the top flight. In the ended, they were just pipped to the post by a slightly better team – don’t forget that the Reds failed to beat Pep Guardiola’s men on both occasions last season, and the gap may have been even larger had Riyad Mahrez not missed a penalty late on in the 0-0 draw at Anfield.
The last thing they did was blow the title, and it is also wrong to be so dismissive of their form this term by saying that the only reason it is being talked about is because of their title drought. With 64 points after 22 matches, they have had the best league season up until this point of any team in the history of the top five leagues in Europe. They have won 21 of those fixtures, and have drawn the other one – irregardless of how long they have not been on the top of the podium, this term would always be talked about.

The feeling here is that Custis is trying to be a little controversial, and also to provide a different opinion to the many plaudits the Merseyside outfit have received. Whilst there is nothing wrong with that in essence, the points made must at least be backed up with concise and interesting arguments. Here, that is not the case.
